USDA Organic Label in Jeopardy

Once again agribusiness has been appointed to the National Organic Standards Board. While the legislation establishing the board and regulating the USDA Organic Label specifies that the board is to be comprised of "those owning or operating a certified organic farm", under both the Bush and Obama administrations those involved with agribusiness have been appointed.

The Cornucopia Institute has criticized the appointment of members of agribusiness to the board as well as the secretive process used to appoint new board members. Cornucopia claims that such appointments have weakened the USDA Organic label and increased the number of synthetic additives in organic labeled food.
